Member guide

When you join a 150-year-old private club, you need some help navigating your new invesment in membership. This guide allows new members to become Sutter Club experts and increases their likelihood to remain active members. The more members utilize their club, the more they bring potential new members with them to social functions which increases the net worth of a member-invite-only approval process.

Welcome to The Sutter Club. We are so happy to have you as a member. This guide is intended to help you make use of the Club by highlighting some things that will hopefully enhance your membership experience.

 Club Access

Do you have a key fob or the ISONAS Key Fob App programmed on your phone for garage access? If not, please follow the instructions here to download the app on your phone or request a key fob through the front desk at concierge@sutterclub.org. The first physical fob is included in your membership, and any replacements due to loss will be charged to your member account.

Our garage at 824 L Street is open to you 7 days per week with your key fob and/or ISONAS App. The parking garage is monitored during open hours from 7:00 am - 7:00 pm Monday- Friday, excluding holidays and connects to our Bridge Door that opens to the First Mezzanine of The Sutter Club. The Club is unlocked via the Bridge Door at 7am each weekday, but no services are offered until 11:30 am when the Grill and Tap Room open. Our doors close at 7pm each weekday unless there is a Golden 1 Event or a Sutter Event that keeps the Club open later.

The Sutter Club's 9th Street door is locked 24 hours per day, but your fob will allow you access Monday-Friday 7am - 7pm, and our staff can open the door for members with access to security camera footage.

Where & How Cell Phones Are Permitted

Cell phones can be used in our Telephone Booths, which are located on the First Floor across from our Tap Room, in the Business Center, and in any reserved private room in the Club. You can use your cell phones for texting, emailing, and any task that does not require sound of any kind.

    • You can access the entire year of posted events by visiting our Calendar and following the same steps.

    • On the app:

      • Tap "Account" on the bottom of the app screen and then "My Reservations" to see your active registrations.

Member Directory & Email

Are you and your partner receiving the Sutter Club emails? If not, please add your email and your partner's email to your profiles in the Member Directory. This means you get confirmation emails each time one of you signs up for an event or makes a dining reservation and minimize the chance that you'll miss out on an event that sells out quickly.

If you have a partner, please teach them to use the Sutter Club website so they can sign you both up for events if you forget. Spouses can register themselves and guests for events even if you as the member are not there.

Dining Options

  • Lunch: The Sutter Club is open for lunch Monday-Friday from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm in the Grill. Reservations are not required, though if you have a party of 6-10  it might be wise to reserve a table to avoid waiting while the table gets set up for you. Parties larger than 10 will require a private room that can be booked through Catering & Events Director, Kelly Bland (kelly@sutterclub.org).

  • Dinner:  Check the calendar for our Friday Night Dinners. These are usually once per month, but we do occasionally skip these in favor of a Sutter Event. These will pick back up in February 2023.

  • Events: At least once per month we have an event such as our Wine Dinner series, and annual favorites like the Summer Smoker, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas Ball, and Champagne Dinner. These are listed on our monthly calendar and announced in weekly emails from our Communications Director, David Ligon.

 Spontaneous Sutter Club

You can eat and drink in the Tap Room Monday- Friday from 4pm - 7pm -and you can have drinks from 11am-7pm. Walk-in dining is available Monday-Friday from 11:30am - 1:30 pm for lunch in the Grill, and we offer breakfast weekly on Wednesdays until November 16th. After November 16th, our holiday season is in full swing, and we won't serve breakfast again until 2023 (excluding Sutter and private events).

 Golden 1 Events

Golden 1 Events are a great way to make use of the Tap Room and the Parking Garage, as the events center is two blocks from The Sutter Club. Additionally, your parking fee is waived on Golden 1 Event nights if Members come into the Club and order something from the Tap Room (can be food or drink). While we do relax the rules on bringing guests under 18, we still need everyone to adhere to our dress code. Shorts are not allowed in the Sutter Club, nor are t-shirts or athletic wear.

If you’d prefer to use the Sutter Club Parking Garage without coming in for a pre-event drink or food item, you will be charged $15 for a parking fee and your guests will be charged $20 per car to your Member account. Our Parking Garage is not monitored after 7:00 p.m. so Members need their garage fob or smart phone app (see Johann or Max about setting it up) to access the garage after 7:00 p.m. If you don’t have the ISONAS app downloaded, we recommend using it to access the Club and the Parking Garage.

All you need to request a letter is your name, travel dates, email address, and the name and location of the Club you wish to visit. Fill out the form at the bottom of this page and we will send a letter for you within 3 business days. Each time you register for an event, you can make note of any dietary restrictions you have such as gluten free, dairy intolerance, vegetarian, vegan, low sodium. The best time to indicate your requests is when you register, but you can add them up to 72 hours prior to the event either via comments, via email to concierge@sutterclub.org or by calling 916.596.6300.

Private Events

The Sutter Club is a popular event space for members and friends of members, and we host the most from November – February, so please read on if you’re curious about how it all works or want to know why the reader boards are always so packed with private events.

What are the most popular events to host?

Far and above, the most common event here is a business meeting that includes a meal, usually lunch. Business parties and celebrations of life are in close second and third. Then come birthdays and weddings, which are our least common events, but we do them quite well when a member or friend of a member gets married here.

How many times per year can you book an event?

You have no limit to the number of events you can host here, so book away! Reciprocal members can also host events here, and likely you can host an event at a reciprocal club as well (just ask for an intro letter and they will let you inquire).

Who do I start a conversation with if I want to find out more about pricing?

Kelly Bland is our Director of Catering & Events and has a 15-year private city club background, so she is an invaluable resource for all things party planning. Her email address is kelly@sutterclub.org and direct line is 916-596-6308. She will need dates, number of guests, and some estimation of your budget to get the ball rolling for you.
